This program provides education for individuals seeking a career in the laboratory as a Certified Surgical Technician. Individuals who successfully complete the Surgical Technician program will receive a certificate of completion from GAHS allowing students to sit for the National and State certification examinations. The course of study for surgical technologists includes classroom instruction in the sciences, patient care, anatomy, and surgical procedures. You’ll also get hands-on practice in clinical settings that prepare you to join a surgical team of doctors and registered nurses in an operating theater.
As a student, you’ll get to see first-hand how surgery is performed, and learn how an operating team works together. During your clinical labs, expect to assist in preparing the operating rooms prior to surgical procedures; sterilize the room both before and after procedures; and learn how to assist surgeons and nurses during actual operations. Our program will also include academic courses in communication, social sciences, and quantitative reasoning. These skills provide a foundation for the technical prowess that you’ll gain in a surgical tech program. The primary goal of the Surgical Technology Program is to provide students with a learning environment that will enable them to acquire the (1) knowledge, (2) technical skills, and (3) behavioral components necessary for entry-level employment as a competent Surgical Technologist. The surgical technology student is given a broad background in the basic sciences of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, and microbiology to serve as the foundation for the advanced subjects to follow. As the program progresses, students learn:
· The practical aspects of operating room procedures
· Aseptic techniques and procedures
· Sterilization techniques
· Instrument set-ups
· Assessment & management of emergencies encountered during surgery
